Perspective Put In Place By A 10 Year Old

So, it's the dreaded month of February. Normally people LOVE this month. There's flowers, candy, love, poetry, soft music, groundhogs, cupids, blah, blah, blah.

If you're a teacher and you teach at my school...you quickly learn to HATE February because it's SCIENCE EXPO MONTH! AHHHHHHHHHHH! (For those oldies, Science Expo is the new Science Fair!) It's awful. And, it's mandatory.

Normally, I get out of grading these lovely things, I just have to show up for the expo part, let a few parents see me, scoot out the back and wish em' well. Not this year. No sirree! I actually had to listen to presentations. Grade projects. Are you kidding me? I teach Health for a reason, I avoid Science like it's the plague.

Even through the grumbling, I can announce that all 23 presentations are done, and I did manage to squeak out alive. I now know what kind of toothpaste to buy, how to assemble a lemon battery, which pan to bake cookies on so they don't burn, how long my helium balloons will last at the ice rink and that it takes 8 tablespoons of salt to make an egg float in water. These are just a few of the new things I've learned. There was oh so much more.

I normally don't try to pick favorites...but sometimes it just happens. Here was my favorite by far:
Project: Which has more bacteria, a human mouth, a dog's mouth of a toilet.
Investigation: proved that the dog's mouth was the worst, the human's was the best and the toilet was right in the middle.
Conclusion: (and this is a direct quote of how she summed up her project) "Remember people, next time you get puppy kisses, a dog's tongue is not only their wash cloth, but also their toilet paper."

I love the perspective I get from my students.
